Toon van Waterschoot

Toon van Waterschoot is the Principal Investigator of the KU Leuven Audio Engineering Lab. He is currently an Associate Professor and Consolidator Grantee of the European Research Council (ERC) at KU Leuven.

Aldona Niemiro-Sznajder

Aldona Niemiro-Sznajder is a Project Manager at the Stadius Center for Dynamical Systems, Signal Processing, and Data Analytics. She manages the SOUNDS and SONORA projects at the KU Leuven Audio Engineering Lab.

Randall Ali

Randall Ali is a Postdoc working in the SOUNDS and SONORA projects, on the intersection of physical/numerical acoustics and signal processing. He holds a PhD from KU Leuven obtained in 2020.

Thomas Dietzen

Thomas Dietzen is a Postdoc working in the SONORA project on the development of a compressed sensing framework for room acoustics. He holds a PhD degree from KU Leuven obtained in 2019.

Filip Elvander

Filip Elvander is a Postdoc of the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO) working on interpolation, sampling, and uncertainty modeling for acoustic environments. He holds a PhD degree from Lund University obtained in 2020.

Elisa Tengan

Elisa Tengan is a PhD Student of the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO) supervised by Toon van Waterschoot. She is working on signal processing algorithms for spatial audio analysis using moving microphones.

Martin Jälmby

Martin Jälmby is a PhD Student in the SONORA project supervised by Toon van Waterschoot. He is working on the design of fast and matrix-free optimization algorithms for acoustic signal processing problems.

Arina Epure

Arina Epure is a PhD Student in the UNMUTED project supervised by Toon van Waterschoot. She is working on the automatic analysis of multi-channel improvisational music recordings with applications in music therapy.

  • Gert Dekkers was a PhD Student in our team from 2013 to 2021, working on energy-aware distributed signal processing and event detection in wireless acoustic sensor networks. He is now with Magics.
  • Giuliano Bernardi was a PhD student in our team from 2012 to 2018, working on acoustic signal enhancement in hearing instruments, and stayed as a Postdoc from 2018 to 2021, working on cooperative audio signal processing. He is now with ConneXounds, a spin-off of our lab.

  • Mina Mounir was a PhD Student in our team from 2014 to 2020, working on signal processing and machine learning for audio analysis. He is now a Postdoc at the KU Leuven Department of Biosystems.
  • Jared Houghtaling was a Postdoc in our team from 2019 to 2020, working on modeling and analysis of respiratory sounds. He is now with edenceHealth.
  • Brian Fitzpatrick was a Postdoc in our team from 2018 to 2020, working on geometric and wave-based numerical methods for room acoustics modeling and simulation. He is now with Modulize.
  • Bisrat Derebssa Dufera was a visiting PhD Student in our team from 2017 to 2020, working on audio restoration. He succesfully defended his PhD at Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia, where he is now an Assistant Professor.
  • Maja Taseska was a Postdoc in our team from 2018 to 2019, working on the modeling of room acoustics based on manifold learning. She is now with Microsoft Research.
  • Niccolò Antonello was a Marie Curie PhD Student in our team from 2013 to 2018, working on inverse problems in room acoustics using physical models, sparse regularization and numerical optimization, and stayed as a Postdoc from 2018 to 2019, working on numerical room acoustics modeling. He is now with Amazon.
  • Giacomo Vairetti was a Marie Curie PhD Student in our team from 2013 to 2018, working on parametric modeling, identification and equalization of room acoustics. He is now with ABT.
  • Filippos Ineglis was a Research Assistant in our team from 2017 to 2018, working on distributed algorithms for combined acoustic echo and noise control.
  • David Pelegrin Garcia was a Postdoc in our team from 2015 to 2017, working on multi-channel signal enhancement in automotive applications. He is now with WS Audiology.
  • Ante Jukić was a visiting Marie Curie PhD student in our team from 2013 to 2017. He obtained his PhD degree at Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg on the topic of sparse multi-channel linear prediction for blind speech dereverberation. He is now with Apple.
  • Neo Kaplanis was a visiting Marie Curie PhD student in our team from 2013 to 2017. He obtained his PhD degree at Aalbog Universitet on the topic of perceptual modeling and assessment of small-room acoustics. He is now with Bang & Olufsen.
  • Martijn Hemeryck was a part-time Research Assistant in our team from 2014 to 2016, working on audio analysis for bioacoustics applications. He is now with CodaBox.
  • Enzo De Sena was a Postdoc in our team from 2013 to 2016, working on physical and perceptual room acoustics modeling. He is now a Senior Lecturer at Surrey University.
  • Pablo Peso Parada was a visiting Marie Curie PhD student in our team from 2013 to 2016. He obtained his PhD degree at Imperial College London on the topic of spatial features of reverberant speech with applications in speech recognition and diarization. He is now with Samsung Research.
  • Joseph Szurley was a Postdoc in our team in 2015, working on acoustic signal enhancement for hearing implants. He is now with Unbabel.
  • Nejem Huleihel was a Marie Curie PhD Student in our team from 2013 to 2014, working on adaptive beamforming for reverberant speech enhancement and recognition. Nejem sadly passed away on January 26, 2014. May his soul rest in peace.
  • Bruno Defraene was a PhD Student in our team from 2010 to 2013, working on embedded optimization algorithms for perceptual enhancement of audio signals. He is now with Goodix.
  • Jose Manuel (Pepe) Gil-Cacho Lorenzo was a PhD Student in our team from 2008 to 2013, working on nonlinear acoustic echo and feedback control. He is now with NXP.
  • Ludovico Ausiello was a visiting Marie Curie PhD Student in our team from 2007 to 2008, working on frequency-warped sigma delta modulation. He is now a Senior Lecturer at the University of Portsmouth.
